The Norwegian Media Authority has asked young people aged 16-20 about hate speech online. They are more susceptible to cyberbullying than the rest of the population.

The survey has no definition of what a hateful comment is.

  • 25 percent of teenagers have received hateful comments in the last 12 months, whereas only 4 percent of the general population responds the same.
  • Some hate speech is a criminal offense. 12 percent of adolescents have received such comments, compared to just over 2 percent of the general population (see page 34 of the report).
  • Over half of the comments come from strangers.
  • One-third of the teenagers got a worse self-image from the hateful comments.
  • Hate can also take place during gaming.
  • The comments can be about religion, gender, gender identity, and much more. Hate can go in any direction; you can get it because you are an ethnic Norwegian or because you are not good enough Muslim.
  • Negative comments about body and appearance are especially difficult to forget.
  • For the question “Where on the web did you get hateful comments last time?”, Snapchat and TikTok came on the top answer list. It’s rare to receive hateful comments on YouTube.
  • The three most common reactions after a hateful comment are: 1) You get a worse self-image. 2) Block the person. 3) Report the person.

The full survey can be found here (in Norwegian).
